Official Lymm.com Launch

Posted by Neil on Saturday, 13 February 2010, at 12:09

Lymm.com was officially launched on Friday, 12th February 2010

Although Lymm.com has been "online" for a couple of weeks, we haven't officially told anyone. If you're reading this you must've had insider information - well done!

The real reason

Actually, the reason we officially launched on the 12th of February was to give us one final chance to iron out any minor technical issues and double check all our content. These tasks are almost complete, so we felt it was a good time to let a wider audience know about Lymm.com.

Lymm.com in Lymm Life

The next edition of Lymm Life features an editorial about Lymm.com! As always, let us know what you think of the site and what changes and/or enhancements you'd like to see - we're ready and waiting to help.

My first reaction to Lymm TV is ... would it be better worded "Lymm Spy TV".  Can someone please explain to me the benefit of the village centre being under constant worldwide survelliance and subsequent loss of privacy, in return for the ability to see your town live!!!  I cannot see this trend would benefit anybody except the people who would wish to eventually watch your every move.

I was also shocked to see Camera 4 constantly placed on a private residence which is therefore on view to the world of the comings and goings of the occupants.  I would consider it a serious security issue having my house under constant coverage for anybody to see!!!

I would like people to consider negative impact of these cameras because personally I find it difficult to see any powerful positives towards this.

Thanks for your comments Lanzababe. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one!

The first point I would like to make is that the cameras are extremely popular, especially with ex-pats. Only recently I received a glowing email from an ex Lymm resident who now resides in California.

Secondly, I have to disagree with your comments re: camera 4. There is nowhere near enough detail to warrant alarm in my honest opinion.

Rather than having a negative impact, I truly believe the cameras will have a positive effect on the village. What about crime prevention? Would you or others not agree that they provide an extremely effective deterrent?

Hi Neil, Thank you for your comments regarding my post.

I agree with you that the cameras will be very popular with our ex-pats who used to reside in Lymm - however they are not the ones who are under surveillance so they probably wouldn't mind as much as the residents who are still here!  I think the benefit of being able to walk down the road doing your shopping without being filmed doing so far outweighs the benefit of an ex-pat being able to look at a live picture of the Cross.

Regarding Camera 4 - I have to disagree with you here.  I believe there is enough detail to warrant alarm when the front door is under 24 hour surveillance for all to see.  As stated in my last comment I am concerned about privacy and feel that any half-witted burglar would be able to realise, after survelliance from this camera, if the property was empty.

I am wondering why these comments are not showing up on your forum yet - I look forward to seeing them posted asap so we can get a debate going here as obviously it is more than just mine and your views that matter.

Not sure what issues you're having with comments, I've emailed you about that.

FYI the owner of the house you refer to is more than aware of the camera and it's security benefits. I'll contact you via email to explain further.

What do others think?
