My Charity Challenge

Laura Chambers

I believe in fate, superstitions and that laughter is the best medicine. I also believe in angels, good men and other fantasy creatures. The only one I’m going to reflect on here though is fate. I’ve always thought that everything happens for a reason, and whatever does happen is your destiny!

So I’d been having one of them days where you feel a bit lost and don’t know what to do with your life, when a friend texted me.... She was telling me about some Charity Climb she’d signed up for. Reading this at God know what time in the morning after the way I’d been feeling all day I thought what the hell, I’m gonna do it too! Be it fate, fortune or karma, or maybe just my tired and vulnerable state at that time in the morning, I’d signed myself up for what is probably going to my biggest challenge yet!

Killer Kili Facts, uhoh...

At a massive 19,340 feet Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the World! This mammoth mountain is made up of three volcanoes and supports 5 major eco-zones, these being rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and glaciers. So the Rooftop of Africa’s sizzling savannah is a snow-capped peak?! This bad boy is BIIIIIIIG!!!

Childreach International

The Charity who I’ll be doing the climb for is Childreach International. They are a UK registered grass roots charity that has worked with over 70,000 children in the past year alone. They work in genuine partnership with local communities in the developing world to help improve children’s access to healthcare, education, child rights and protection. They operate on their own projects and support partner's projects in Tanzania, India, Nepal, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Pakistan, Peru, Cambodia, China and Bangladesh.

Pounds to the Peak

So the first step to the Kili for Kids Challenge is raising the dollar for the trip! A minimum £3000 needs to be raised, over half of which will go directly to Childreach International projects around the World! Below is a link to my BT My Donate page which is one way in which we can help to raise the funds. Any donation, no matter how big or small, is MASSIVELY appreciated! It’s only through your help that we can make this all possible. Thanks so much everyone!!

Movember Mayhem on the Menu

Posted by Steph on Wednesday, 16 November 2011, at 15:09

To mark the month of November, men around the world have been urged to get behind a moustache growing campaign to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer. The aptly named campaign, Movember, is being backed by local chefs at The Church Green in Lymm, who are guaranteeing some serious facial hair styles!

The chefs have registered at www.Movember.com with a clean-shave face and then for the rest of the month, the men, known as Mo Bros, will groom, trim and wax their way into the hall of moustache fame.

The funds raised in the UK support the number one and two male specific cancers - prostate and testicular cancer. They are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and their men’s health partners, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research.

Aiden Byrne, owner of The Church Green in Lymm and the British Grill at The Macdonald Craxton Wood Hotel said, “Last year the UK campaign raised an amazing £11.7 million, so this year we thought we’d take part to help exceed that total. We will be asking diners if they wish to donate £1 to the cause in return to meet the moustaches!”

He continues, “We all like to have a bit of fun and raise money for great causes like this and we hope all our diners get behind us and pledge their support.”

Movember, which first began in Melbourne Australia, has grown to become a truly global movement working to change attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, getting them to act on that knowledge thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.

Aiden and his staff will be posting photographic evidence of their growth on twitter @aidenbyrne and @thechurchgreen as well as The Church Green facebook page, and readers are encouraged to follow their progress and share their Movember stories and pictures with them.

Record Figure Raised from Round Table Bonfire

Posted by Matthew on Sunday, 28 November 2010, at 10:41

A record £5,000 profit was raised from the event

The Lymm and District Round Table are set to donate thousands more to charity after totting up the proceeds from their annual bonfire and fireworks night.

A record £5,000 profit was raised from the event held at Lymm Rugby Club on Crouchley Lane, an impressive £1,000 more than last year.

Bonfire organiser and Round Table member Richard Storey said: “We’d like to thank all the people who came along and supported the event, it was a great night and the fireworks were as spectacular as ever.

“Our gratitude also goes out to the event’s main sponsors – Kids Planet Day Nursery – and all the stall holders who provided some much-needed hot food and drink to the public. With so much money raised this year, we’ll do well to top it next time around – but we’ll certainly give it a good go!”

Charities set to benefit from the bonfire funds include North West Air Ambulance, Lymm British Legion, and the Prostate Cancer Charity – a cause which the Round Table members are also supporting by growing moustaches as part of the popular ‘Movember’ campaign.

The Round Table’s next big community event is the Lymm Dickensian Day on December 11th, followed by Burns’ Night on January 21st and the Lymm Duck Race on Easter Monday. If you or your business would like to sponsor any of these events, or you’d simply like to find out more about the Lymm and District Round Table, please email info@lymmroundtable.co.uk

Bon Fire Night

The Movember Shave Off!

Posted by Laura on Wednesday, 24 November 2010, at 16:36

Lymm Shepherds say farewell to their facial fuzz...

So you may have noticed that there have been a few dodgy looking moustaches and goatees knocking about at the moment, but there is a reason for it!

"Movember" is when the Mo (slang for moustache) comes together with November each year to create a charity moustache growing event that raises funds and awareness for men’s health. It challenges men to change their appearance and grow a moustache throughout the month of November which then, in its own furry way, becomes the ribbon for Prostate Cancer. They simply start the month of Movember with a clean shave, and commit to growing a moustache for the next 30 days.

A Bunch of Bearded Shepherds

So now you know the mystery behind the masses of moustaches, let's hear who's been getting involved? The "Lymm Shepherd" are a Hill Walking group of Lymm locals (best known for their successful Three Peaks Challenge for charity event last year which raised over £5000 for Spina Bifeda). They have binned their razors in favour of Movember resulting in a rather hairy looking group of gents! One of the group, Richard Napier-Hemy, was recently affected when his father in law was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, so the charity is obviously very close to his heart. However, with Movember drawing to a close its time to slap on some foam and de-fuzz those faces, allowing the lads to be recognised again!

Razor Sharp at The Venue's Big Shave Off

Due to be held at The Venue on Tuesday 30th November, "The Big Shave Off" will be performed by Jackie of local barber Sweeney Todd. Not only will we be saying farewell to the men's moustaches but one of the group who already has a beard will be shaving his head too, all in support of charity. So get down to The Venue for 7pm and come join in for a noble cause!

Donations can be made directly to Movember Charity, quoting "Lymm Shepherds", and donations can also be given at The Venue. The evenings events are also taking place prior to The Venue's Open Mic Night which will be renamed “MOPEN MIC NIGHT” in support of the theme.
