My Charity Challenge

Laura Chambers

I believe in fate, superstitions and that laughter is the best medicine. I also believe in angels, good men and other fantasy creatures. The only one I’m going to reflect on here though is fate. I’ve always thought that everything happens for a reason, and whatever does happen is your destiny!

So I’d been having one of them days where you feel a bit lost and don’t know what to do with your life, when a friend texted me.... She was telling me about some Charity Climb she’d signed up for. Reading this at God know what time in the morning after the way I’d been feeling all day I thought what the hell, I’m gonna do it too! Be it fate, fortune or karma, or maybe just my tired and vulnerable state at that time in the morning, I’d signed myself up for what is probably going to my biggest challenge yet!

Killer Kili Facts, uhoh...

At a massive 19,340 feet Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the World! This mammoth mountain is made up of three volcanoes and supports 5 major eco-zones, these being rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and glaciers. So the Rooftop of Africa’s sizzling savannah is a snow-capped peak?! This bad boy is BIIIIIIIG!!!

Childreach International

The Charity who I’ll be doing the climb for is Childreach International. They are a UK registered grass roots charity that has worked with over 70,000 children in the past year alone. They work in genuine partnership with local communities in the developing world to help improve children’s access to healthcare, education, child rights and protection. They operate on their own projects and support partner's projects in Tanzania, India, Nepal, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Pakistan, Peru, Cambodia, China and Bangladesh.

Pounds to the Peak

So the first step to the Kili for Kids Challenge is raising the dollar for the trip! A minimum £3000 needs to be raised, over half of which will go directly to Childreach International projects around the World! Below is a link to my BT My Donate page which is one way in which we can help to raise the funds. Any donation, no matter how big or small, is MASSIVELY appreciated! It’s only through your help that we can make this all possible. Thanks so much everyone!!

2012 It's Olympic Year

Posted by Ken on Tuesday, 13 December 2011, at 10:09

It's Also the Inaugural Lymm.com 10K!

Yes folks, it's "O-Lymm-pic" year in 2012 and the team at Lymm.com are holding the inaugural Lymm.com 10K race. It's scheduled for Sunday 15th April 2012 and Lymm High School have kindly offered the school facilities for the day. There will also be the opportunity to look at what Lymm Leisure Centre has to offer. Spectators and runners will arrive to the welcoming smell of bacon and sausage sandwiches freshly cooked by the local scout group. If you fancy something slightly different why not try the hog roast, hot dogs or BBQ. For those who fancy a bit of spice in their life there is even a touch of Thai. For lovers of fine coffee you can finish off the meal with a warming cup of "Starbucks". For the kids we will try to invite Mr Whippy.

The fun starts at 9.15am with "Wolfie" of Warrington Wolves and "Sharkie" of Sale Sharks starting the Lymm.com 1 Mile Fun Run, open to all ages (come on granddad, take the grand kids for a jog). It's a fun run NOT a race and ALL entrants will receive a Lymm.com fun run medal. The main event, limited to 750 runners, starts at 10am prompt. For the serious runners there are cash prizes up for grabs. M/F 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Male/Female veterans, 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Male/Female Teams of 4. Goody bags are planned for all runners of the main event.

How To Enter

Please click here find out more and to enter the race, or please use the buttons below.

Entries are already flooding in, so please don't hesitate to enter.

The Route

If you don't know Lymm don't worry as the roads will be closed and the route will be well signed and marshalled. If you know Lymm, the race starts with a clockwise lap and a half of Lymm High School playing fields. Leaving the school on the second lap at the gate keepers lodge, turn right into Oughtrington Lane and immediately left down Longbutt Lane. At the bottom of Longbutt Lane turn left into Pepper Street, right at Grove Rise and right onto Rosebank. Along Rosebank take the second on the right and back up to Pepper Street. Turn left along Pepper Street and the bridle path emerging onto Oughtrington Lane. Turn right up Oughtrington, passing the half way mark, watering station and St Peters Church. At the junction of Longbutt Lane turn right and complete a second lap back down Longbutt Lane. Passing St Peters for the second time continue straight on, returning into the school ground at the gate keepers lodge. All that is left is half a clockwise lap around the school fields to the finishing line, a big cheer, and, an official race time "chipped" and supplied by TDL.

If you have any ideas or suggestions please email 10K@lymm.com. We want it to be a FUN day. Let the countdown begin!

Lymm Senior Touch Rugby team raising money for Cancer Research

Posted by Matthew on Saturday, 30 July 2011, at 11:30

Registered their first competitive win during a fesival in Widnes

The Lymm Senior Touch Rugby team registered their first competitive win during a fesival in Widnes on Saturday 17th July, raising money for Cancer Research. Having only been formed in January, the team consists of a group of coaches, mums and dads of Lymm RFC's mini and juniors and range in age from mid thirties to 50 yrs.

Last saturday saw Lymm play in an invitational charity festival, hosted by Halton Touch and competing against established Touch teams from Manchester, North Wales and Tyneside. This was the second such event that Lymm have participated in, following their debut in Wrexham on 11th of June.

Despite a mixture of torrential rain and bright sunshine, the Halton tournament was played in round robin format, and Lymm managed their first ever positive result in a 2-2 draw with North Wales Touch. The two teams were then paired again in the shield final in which Lymm ran out 3-2 winners.

Touch Rugby is a fast, no contact game, that can be played at any age. Mainstream competitions are played by mixed teams. At the moment the Lymm squad is mainly male orientated, and are actively trying to redress the balance. If you would like to join in, get fit and socialise in the pub later, then come along to the rugby club in Crouchley Lane on Friday evenings at 7:00pm.

More pictures from the tournament and details of Touch Rugby can be found on the England Touch Rugby website

Lymm Swingers join like minded people on a course.

Posted by Matthew on Sunday, 3 July 2011, at 15:16

The Dam Cup

Lymm Village Swingers,(Golfing Swingers that is!),took on outsiders in an inaugural Golf Day organised by local resident John Stretford at Lymm Golf Club on the 24th June. THE DAM CUP saw 21 teams, 11 from Lymm, compete for numerous prizes and the honour of winning The Dam Cup. This year the victors were the Local Teams, captained by John Stretford, which won by just two points. Losing captain of the Non-Local teams, Richard Gilling from the Altrincham Golf School, commented "The day was great fun, the course itself was in great condition and I was proud to be asked to represent the Non-Local Teams as Captain. John and his staff certainly organised the day very well and I am already looking forward to taking Lymm on again next year in The Dam Cup"

Local team, Rick Shaw's Ringers, also took the Best Team prize which went to a Card Play Off between a Non-Local Team of Ex-Professional Football Players – Ashley Ward (Man City, Blackburn, Barnsley), David Thompson (Blackburn, Liverpool & England) and Steve Watson (Newcastle United, Aston Villa & Everton).

Best Ladies Team went to Non-Locals, Helen's Ab Fab 4, who were presented with an exclusive gift each, donated by Catyas Cadeaux of Lymm.

Once all the prizes had been awarded 50 or so of the swingers moved to The Bull Public House in the village for a quickie! before Dinner. Pub landlord Jerry McGerty said "He didn't realise the village had so many swingers and was more than happy to just watch this year! He was hoping to play with one of the teams as soon as possible." En-masse the group then moved to Bowden`s Restaurant where they wined, dined & danced until the early hours of the morning.

John commented on the event by saying "The Dam Cup took a bit of pulling together but I would like to publicly thank everyone who took part. I was more than thrilled to have 21 teams compete in this, the first year. The feedback has been fantastic and I am in no doubt that we achieved what we set out to do and showed my friends what a great village we live in. We also managed to raise over £500 for Help For Heroes which was a bonus but next year I will be picking a local Charity to benefit from the event."
